The dream of becoming a doctor, psychologist, or any other health practitioner can feel both exciting and overwhelming because of some med student stories in college. What’s more, as a pre-med student, you need a high-quality training ground for the kind of healthcare professional you want to become.

At Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao (Mapúa MCM), students are guided by strong academics, global exposure, and mentors who understand what it takes to succeed in medicine. Through the College of Health Sciences and a collaboration with Arizona State University®, Mapúa MCM provides students with a globally connected education while staying grounded in the realities of local healthcare. The result is a new generation of graduates who can move from Mindanao classrooms to medical schools across the country and even abroad.

Building A Medical Future at Mapúa MCM: Pre-Med Student Testimonials

Mapúa MCM students are trained not only in theories and laboratory techniques, but also in research, communication, cultural awareness, and resilience. With global classrooms and international collaborations, students gain exposure to perspectives that go beyond the borders of one city or country.

Seeing Health Through a Global Lens

Anna Luisa T. Yap chose a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a clear sense of purpose. Coming from Mindanao, she wanted an education that would allow her to serve her community while understanding the broader world.

She shares, “My experience in Mapúa MCM’s global classes taught me how to see health and behavior from different cultural perspectives. Coming from Mindanao and pursuing Psychology, I’m grateful that Mapúa MCM prepares me to think globally while serving locally.”

Through globally integrated classes, Anna did not just study theories from textbooks. She explored how culture shapes behavior, how mental health is understood differently around the world, and how social factors influence well-being. This exposure sharpened her ability to see patients not as case numbers, but as people shaped by context, background, and lived experience.

Anna’s pre-med student experience shows that preparing for med school can begin with learning how to listen, observe, and think critically about human behavior. Her story reminds aspiring doctors and psychologists that excellence in healthcare begins with empathy supported by strong academic training.

Strengthening Medicine Through Research

If Anna’s journey highlights a humanistic perspective, Laviña Naive’s story emphasizes research.

As a Bachelor of Science in Biology student, she understands that the future of healthcare depends heavily on strong scientific foundations. She explains, “Research in the life sciences strengthens the future of medical laboratory practice. Collaborating with international researchers on global environmental and health-related data reflects the analytical and research skills essential to future medical technologists and laboratory scientists.”

Her work goes beyond routine laboratory exercises. By engaging with global environmental and health-related data, she develops analytical skills that are essential in medical technology and allied health sciences. These are the same skills required in diagnosing diseases, interpreting laboratory results, and contributing to medical discoveries.

She adds, “As a Mapúa MCM student, I hope to continue contributing to research with real-world relevance, an important step in preparing for careers in medical technology and allied health sciences.”

For students in Mindanao who aspire to pursue medicine or laboratory sciences, Laviña’s pre-med student testimonial shows that preparation begins with curiosity. It begins with asking questions, analyzing data carefully, and understanding that every detail matters in patient care.

Her path reflects how Mapúa MCM connects classroom learning with global collaboration, strengthening students’ readiness for the demands of medical school and beyond.

Preparing the Whole Person for Medicine School

Medical school is demanding. The long hours, heavy workload, and emotional weight of patient care can challenge even the strongest students. Academic preparation alone is not enough.

Behind every successful student is a support system that believes in their potential. For the College of Health Sciences, that support is intentional. Mr. Lindy Paul S. Aldaba, Program Chair of BS Psychology, explains this clearly:

“At Mapúa MCM, we emphasize that mental well-being is the foundation of lifelong learning, especially for students who plan to pursue medicine. Our Psychology and Biology graduates enter med school not only academically prepared but also resilient and self-aware.”

By nurturing mental well-being, self-awareness, and resilience, Mapúa MCM ensures that its graduates are equipped for the pressures of medical training. Students learn how to manage stress, reflect on their growth, and maintain balance—skills that are often overlooked but deeply necessary in the med student experience.

Mr. Aldaba further reflects, “Seeing [students] move from Mindanao to medical training programs across the country and even abroad reflects how holistic preparation can shape future healthcare professionals.”

The transition from local classrooms in Mindanao to national and international medical programs is the result of careful mentoring, rigorous academics, and a learning environment that challenges students while supporting them.

From Mindanao to Medicine School and Beyond

Through a collaboration with Arizona State University®, the Mapúa MCM College of Health Sciences strengthens its pre-med programs in the Philippines with global standards while remaining responsive to local healthcare needs. Students gain international exposure without leaving Mindanao—a powerful advantage for those who want a world-class education close to home.

What connects the pre-med student experiences of Anna, Laviña, and the many other graduates of Mapúa MCM is their global outlook, strong research and analytical skills, and emotional resilience. These competencies lead students to have a deep understanding of community health with the confidence to compete in medical schools nationwide and beyond.
