4th Year ME Students Educational Visit at Aboitiz Therma Marine – Power Barge under the course ME162P (Power Plant Design with Renewable Energy) Feb 03, 2026, Maco, Davao de Oro

Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao (Mapúa MCM), through the College of Engineering and Architecture – Mechanical Engineering Department, conducted an educational visit to the Aboitiz Therma Marine Power Barge Generation Plant in Maco, Davao de Oro as part of the ME162P: Power Plant Design with Renewable Energy course, providing students with valuable industry exposure and hands-on learning opportunities.

The activity engaged 16 fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering students, who were guided by faculty members Engr. Ace Van Cardiff Aleria and Engr. Fredie Diez. The visit aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications by immersing students in an actual power generation facility.

During the visit, students were introduced to key concepts in power generation, including energy conversion processes, operational efficiency, and load management. They also gained insights into essential plant operations such as startup and shutdown procedures, maintenance practices, and safety protocols, all of which are critical in ensuring reliable and efficient energy production.

Industry professionals facilitated discussions and walkthroughs within the facility, allowing students to observe the practical application of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, electrical machines, and power systems. The engagement also highlighted environmental considerations, including emission control measures and sustainable energy practices, reinforcing the importance of responsible engineering in today’s energy sector.

Through direct interaction with plant engineers and operational staff, students were able to better understand industry standards, professional responsibilities, and current challenges in the Philippine power sector. The experience provided a deeper appreciation of the competencies required in the field and offered insights into potential career pathways in energy and power generation industries.

This initiative reflects Mapúa MCM’s commitment to delivering experiential and industry-relevant education that equips students with the technical knowledge and professional skills needed for future careers.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), the activity underscores the institution’s dedication to advancing sustainable engineering practices and strengthening industry-academe collaboration.
