Dr. Gernelyn T. Logrosa, Project Leader of Geotechnologies for Mineral and Environmental Laboratory and Research Center (GemLAB) and the Director of the Office for Research, Development, and Innovation (ORDI), together with Dr. Anthony C. Sales, Regional Director of the Department of Science and Technology – Davao Region
Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao (Mapúa MCM), launched the GemLAB – Geotechnologies for Mineral and Environmental Laboratory and Research Center on September 26, 2025, during the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) 2025. This marks another step in building Mapúa MCM’s capacity for research that is grounded, applied, and responsive to the needs of Mindanao.
In partnership with the Department of Science and Technology XI (DOST XI), the GemLAB strengthens Mapúa MCM’s role in advancing science-based solutions for mineral and environmental studies. Located in Davao City, the facility provides advanced characterization, testing, and research services for academic, industry, government, and community stakeholders. It also aims to make these services accessible and affordable to artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) communities, supporting responsible mining practices, improved mineral value assessment, and evidence-based environmental stewardship across the Davao region.
Students, faculty, staff, and representatives from Mapúa MCM, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Davao Region, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Apex Mining Co., Inc., and other public and private partner institutions and stakeholders.
The establishment of GemLAB reflects the institution’s commitment to meaningful innovation that responds to regional needs. GemLAB creates space for research to move beyond papers and into practical use by allowing faculty researchers, students, and partners to generate data and insights from real-world challenges. Through its advanced technical and laboratory testing services, reinforced by translational and interdisciplinary research, the facility transforms scientific knowledge into practical solutions, supporting evidence-based decision-making, resource management, environmental protection, policy development, and responsible mining practices in Mindanao.
Students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders received hands-on training on the operation of the XRD and XRF instruments, one of the featured highlights of GemLAB.
Through the establishment of the GemLAB, Mapúa MCM continues to advance research and innovation while strengthening its role as a research partner in the region. Through this, Mapúa MCM connects academic expertise with the communities, industries, and institutions that can benefit from it. This initiative supports SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure by enhancing research infrastructure and scientific innovation, and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals by fostering collaboration with government, industry, and community partners to drive sustainable regional development.
