#ProudMalayan: MapúaMCM Chemical Engineering Students Champion at SUBIDA 2020
Hosted by the University of Mindanao, the SUBIDA 2020: 6th Annual Chemical Engineering Student Summit was held on January 27 – 31, 2020 at the University of Mindanao Gymnasium. Students from different schools participated in this week-long summit and enjoyed various contests, activities and events relevant to their programs.
Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao’s (MapúaMCM) very own B.S. Chemical Engineering students took part in the event and brought home various awards in the Fasthematics Contest, and Mr. and Ms. SUBIDA 2020 pageant.
Three teams composed of three individuals from MapúaMCM participated in the Fasthematics Contest, the second team (Team MapúaMCM B) won the Championship for the quick quiz bowl-style Mathematics contest. This team was composed of 1st Year Chemical Engineering Students, Fatima Jazmeen A. Julmani, John Patrick S. Lonzaga and Jessica Rachell B. Gan.
“It was quite an eye-opening experience. The SUBIDA 2020 made me appreciate the program I am currently taking and has reinforced my dream of becoming a chemical engineer someday. I am also humbled to be part of the team that won the Fasthematics competition with my colleagues, Jazmeen and Jessica. I am honoured to represent our school and would love to participate in future competitions the next time around,” John Patrick S. Lonzaga shared.
Jesson P. Pulan, 2nd Year Chemical Engineering student took home the title of Mr. SUBIDA 2020 after participating in a grueling 2-day pageant composed of various segments that would challenge him and his partner, Erika Chiarienne Anghag, in areas such as public speaking, modeling, and talent showcasing. Jesson took home various other awards on the last night including Mr. Congeniality, Mr. Photogenic, Best in Advocacy, Best in Formal Wear, and Mr. Beautederm.
He had also shared his experience in relation to their presented Advocacy — Media & Information Literacy for the Society — which was also partly inspired by his being a student in a digital school such as Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao. He also mentioned his desire to create a legacy for Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao, glad to have found an avenue such as pageantry to help MapúaMCM leave a significant mark in the Chemical Engineering community.
“I believe that what defines a true chemical engineer is what lies within. A true chemical engineer has the heart to help the society, become globally competitive, socially involved, and desires to be able to bring about a radical change in the community.”
Other participating schools in SUBIDA 2020 are Ateneo de Davao University, University of Mindanao, Xavier University, Mindanao State University – Main Campus (Marawi), and Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology.
