Since its establishment in 2018, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao has pioneered blended learning in Mindanao. Over the years, as MMCM continuously innovates to make education more accessible and more convenient for its students, it has developed the Mapúa MCM FLUX for SY: 2022-2023.
The Mapúa MCM FLUX encompasses the Flexible Learning Ubiquitous Experience the school provides its students. It is an instructional approach that combines face-to-face and online learning, where learners can choose to study face-to-face on campus, online synchronous through virtual classes, or online asynchronous through recorded virtual class sessions and other learning materials through MMCM Digital – the school’s learning management system powered by Blackboard Ultra.
Through this innovation, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao has also been awarded as a winner of the Catalyst Award for Teaching and Learning by Anthology. The award honors institutions that use Blackboard in innovative ways to advance learning.
How does it work?
In comparison to MMCM’s previous blended learning setup pre-pandemic where students have “digital days” for them to catch up on their online learning materials, the new Mapúa MCM FLUX allows students to choose and take charge of their own learning experience. Whether learners choose to participate in their class sessions in-person, online synchronous, or online asynchronous, MMCM is fully capable of catering to their different needs.
The school makes sure to provide various learning delivery methods through face-to-face classes, instructional videos, non-video learning materials, online classes, recorded online or on-site class sessions, and live-streamed face-to-face classes.
What are the benefits of hybrid flexible learning?
Understanding the circumstances where the online setting cannot truly simulate face-to-face class sessions, the Mapúa MCM FLUX provides students with options and opportunities to learn in different modalities and learn in their previous setting.
With this, students will receive more learning opportunities through materials and activities deployed on the MMCM Digital, more control over their pace of learning, more schedule flexibility, and learning without committing to an “only-online” course.
Should there be threats to public health and safety, natural calamities, and other disruptions, the school came up with the Mapúa MCM FLUX, where students get to continue to pursue their education. Beyond that, the Mapúa MCM FLUX also allows flexibility for students abroad or living in other cities who wish to study fully online.
How does Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao do it?
MMCM deploys FLUX by retrofitting the classrooms for utmost flexibility, with technology such as a Smart TV, an AI Camera, a smartphone, and a wireless lapel. This allows teachers to stream their face-to-face classes via Microsoft Teams (online synchronous), which will also be recorded and uploaded to MMCM Digital (online asynchronous).
The Smart TV will display the instructors’ presentations for the students attending face-to-face classes, while the AI Camera is used to capture the instructor and follow their movements using facial recognition as they interact with the students in person. The smartphone, mounted on a tripod, intends to show the students attending on campus, and the wireless lapel will serve as a microphone for the instructor for all students (whether attending in-person or online) to hear.
The Mapúa MCM FLUX ensures an optimum learning environment for students as it caters to any learning modality, giving students the power to choose how to join their classes where they can learn best. Moreover, regardless of the modality, the school’s learning approach ensures that students are provided with the same learning competencies.
