In celebration of Earth Day’s 55th anniversary, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao (Mapúa MCM) joined the global movement last April 22, 2025, with the theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability through a comprehensive lineup of initiatives led by the Institute for Global Sustainability.
Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, is a global reminder of the urgent need to address climate change, pollution, and the unsustainable use of natural resources. This year’s theme underscores the collective role of individuals, institutions, and communities in shaping a more sustainable and resilient future.
As part of its Earth Month observance, Mapúa MCM organized a series of engaging and impactful activities throughout March and April, culminating in the Earth Day celebration. The month-long campaign began with the observance of Earth Hour on March 22, 2025, a symbolic act of switching off lights to raise awareness about energy conservation. This was followed by “17 Goals, 1 Planet: The SDG Seminar Series” held on April 11, which educated participants on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and how each individual can contribute to global sustainability efforts. On April 12, students, faculty, and non-teaching personnel participated in a Tree Growing Activity, reinforcing the importance of reforestation and biodiversity conservation.
Leading up to Earth Day, Mapúa MCM launched a three-pronged set of initiatives on April 21-22: the Plastic Pitch-in Project, which promoted proper plastic disposal and recycling; Swap and Save for the Planet, a sustainability-driven exchange initiative encouraging re-use and mindful consumption; and the Green-ovation Fest, which showcased Micro, Small, and Medium Entyerprises (MSMEs) and NGOs that champion sustainable lifestyle choices and promote sustainability.
These activities collectively promote and advance several key UN Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life Below Water, and SDG 15: Life on Land.
Through these initiatives, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao continues to champion environmental responsibility, encourage innovation, and strengthen its role as an educational institution committed to global sustainability.
