Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao participated in the 3rd Madayaw International Multidisciplinary Research Conference last October 1-2, 2020, with the theme “Shaping the Future of Research Emerging from the COVID-19 Pandemic” hosted by the San Pedro College.
The online conference provided a unique transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach for researchers from all over the globe to collaborate and talk about the present global health crisis and its trends, challenges, solutions, and innovations in their fields of expertise. The categories ranged from Health and Sciences, Environment, Natural, and Physical Sciences, Business and Management, Education, Language, and Literature, and Social Sciences.
The event was attended by many local schools and institutions, as well as international collaborators from Monash University (Malaysia), National Sun Yat-sen University of Taiwan (Taiwan), University of Melbourne (Australia), Daffodil International University (Bangladesh), and the University of Hawaii (United States).
The two-day event started with a plenary session on the first day and poster presentation per cluster. The activities for the second day were plenary concurrent sessions, with key researchers presenting their submitted papers under the various categories of the conference.
Dr. Gernelyn T. Logrosa, Head of MapúaMCM’s Office for Research, Development, & Innovation (ORDI) represented Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao in the Madayaw International Multidisciplinary Research Conference. She presented her authored paper entitled “Risk Management of COVID-19 Spread in Davao City using Multi-model Analysis to Optimize Interventions and Decision-making” with co-authors Leo Manuel Estaña and Dr. May Anne Mata of the Department of Math, Physics, and Computer Science of the University of the Philippines Mindanao.
Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao shared its efforts in research to a global audience, addressing the COVID-19 impacts in Davao City and determining what strategies and interventions would be efficient and sufficient for the city’s efforts in response to the pandemic using a multi-model analysis.
“In a nutshell, the rationale behind this research revolves around the fact that this COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented in terms of the scale of massive impacts and period of time involved. The disruption this pandemic brought to our health, , and of course, the economic disruptions, as we are all aware, with the increasing unemployment…
That is why it is imperative to develop integrated risk management that examines not only the clinical risk factors but their associated various risks.” — Dr. Gernelyn T. Logrosa
The research also aimed to answer if Davao City could have a system of interventions that are site-specific, looking into various contextualized risk factors and if the city could manage risks associated with a pandemic amidst limited resources in a developing country.
“We have found in our paper that indeed it is possible to integrate models for efficiently and sufficiently informed precise decision-making. We were able to make it site-specific, such that the risk factors can be contextualized for appropriate policy interventions in Davao City.
Our methodology is transferable because it’s from a workplace health and safety risk assessment which we were able to adapt infectious diseases or public health discipline, particularly for this COVID-19 pandemic.” — Dr. Gernelyn T. Logrosa
