At Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao, the Google Developer Groups (GDG) held their second conference entitled DevFest 2022 last November 26, 2022. Participants at DevFest learned how to collaborate and develop on Google’s developer tools through hands-on learning opportunities, technical talks delivered by experts in local languages, or simply by meeting other local developers.
Involved and in attendance at this event was the Google Developer Student Clubs (GDSC) Mapúa-MCM as one of the event’s partners, along with the other academic tech communities in Davao. Additionally, one of the DevFest volunteers who worked to make the event possible is a Mapúa MCM 3rd year Computer Science student, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of GDSC Mapúa-MCM, Ms. Ria Cordero.
“GDG shares the same goal as GDSC: to connect individuals who are interested to build a network and grow a career in technology. With the support and inspiration from Google presented through GDG and GDSC, and the technology provided by Mapúa MCM, our Googlers will surely be equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to be ready to enter the tech industry in the future.” shared Ms. Cordero
The guest speakers delivered insightful talks about Google technologies such as Angular, Flutter, and Material Design. Other topics explored startups, becoming a tech entrepreneur, and the first-hand experience of joining tech communities in college to connect with a wider network.
“Through DevFest Davao, our members were able to learn from and connect with Google’s own community of developers via Google Developer Experts (GDE) and our local developers and tech entrepreneurs here in Davao City.” Ms. Cordero added.
Ms. Cordero hopes that GDSC Mapúa-MCM will act as a stepping stone for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) students in achieving their goals and dreams in life, whether it be in the IT industry or elsewhere. They also hopes that ICT students, through the workshops that they have conducted and will conduct, would be able to create projects that can contribute to our society, most especially to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Events like this are the perfect opportunity for tech experts to explore possible opportunities to further develop the local ICT industry. GDG Davao is dedicated to creating networks among colleges and universities and empowering the youth to pursue careers in the ICT sector.
The Davao-based group of Google Developers have been active since 2012. The organizers routinely organize and host meetup events in their communities on a variety of technical and non-technical topics. GDG Davao currently has 70 members, of which 35 are active volunteers.
