Embodying Malayan Excellence: CE Students Win Research Competition in the Civil Engineering x Architecture Student Conference

Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao students won first place in the Research Competition with their research paper entitled “SEICAPS: Application of Ordinal Logistic Regression on Seismic Capacity of Buildings” in the Civil Engineering x Architecture Student Conference (CEASC), a three-day virtual event held last January 16-18, 2021. The research proponents are 3rd Year BS Civil Engineering students, namely John Anthony Liu, Ralph Jason Centino, and Alfred Anton Lima, and their research adviser is Engr. Jay T. Cabuñas.

The event was organized and hosted by the American Concrete Institute Philippines (ACI), United Architects of the Philippines – Student Auxiliary (UAPSA), and Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) of Cebu Institute of Technology – University. Among other events of CEASC are the Plenary, Keynote Talks, and Design Competition.

According to the proponents, the research entails a deeper understanding of earthquake engineering as to how the systematic correlation between buildings and seismic works. They shared that they wanted to explore out of their comfort zone to generate unique and profound ideas for their research, and were inspired when Engr. Cabuñas, their adviser, discussed regression analysis. The study aims to classify infrastructures based on their seismic capacity.

“Because of this, we took the challenge of learning and knowing regression analysis, as well as its potential to be used in improving our program of study. Since we were so interested in earthquake engineering during this time, we immediately came up with idea of making a mathematical model that will predict seismic capacity of infrastructure. Hence, the birth of our core idea, the Seismic Capacity System or SeiCapS.” The students stated in an interview. “Although we were doing this research as an academic requirement for our program, we believe that our research study has the potential to be a solution to our current problems about building stability.”

The goal of the event of the Civil Engineering x Architecture Student Conference is to discuss the importance of adapting to the new decade in the fields of Civil Engineering and Architecture. Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao was invited to be one of the participating schools in the conference.

“We would like to thank our adviser, Engr. Jay T. Cabuñas, for he has inspired us to dwell on a research topic that is unique and profound. We would also like to thank Mr. Zython Paul T. Lachica, a Research Assistant of the University of the Philippines – Mindanao Campus, for being supportive and helpful by giving advice and ideas our research. We would also like to express our sincerest gratitude to one of our colleagues in MapúaMCM, Mr. Raphael Loren Dalangin, for imparting his knowledge and expertise in computer science. We are also blessed to insights from Ms. Ronette A. Bersamin and Dr. Gernelyn T. Logrosa. Without the advice and support from these people, we would not be able to reach what we have accomplished. As we continue to finish our study, we hope we could inspire more students to bring out the best of their capabilities and to show the world how a true Malayan student personifies Excellence and Relevance.” The students stated.
