CCIS Days: Experience Coding and Gaming at MapúaMCM
On December 7, 2019, the first-ever interschool Coding Challenge and Mobile Legends Competition was held at Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao, spearheaded by the College of Computing and Information Science (CCIS) for their CCIS Week celebration. The competitions were open to Grade 10, 11, or 12 students enrolled in any educational institution.
Rhodessa Cascaro, CCIS Dean, is looking forward to hosting more interschool competitions in the future.
“The purpose is to gather senior high school students to give them the experience in coding and gaming in our environment at Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao, and to give them exposure to our equipment and facilities. Yes, we are looking forward to having more interschool competitions in the near future. We have received positive feedback from the students. They will be coming back for more, for sure.”
For the Coding Challenge, the participants were tasked to submit solutions or “runs” to the problems provided. The topics included were Strings and String Manipulation, Arrays, Branching Statements, and Selection Statements. In addition, the programming languages used were C/C++, Java, and Python.
The participants for the Coding Challenge were from Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao, Davao Christian High School, and AMA College of Davao. Both MapúaMCM and DCHS had two participating teams for the competition.
Team COMPGoZui of DCHS was hailed the champions of the Coding Challenge, as they finished the competition with complete and correct solutions for all eight problems. The members of the team were Zui Andrei Dominic Go, Haskel Gerard Nalasa, and Alvin John Vicente, who are Grade 10 and Grade 11 students.
Team AMA_CC_Davao of AMA finished in second place with seven problems solved, while Team Nipalacios of MapúaMCM finished in third place with five problems solved.
For the Mobile Legends Competition, there were four competing teams playing for the Best of 5. The participants were two teams from MapúaMCM, one team from Christian Colleges of Southeast Asia (CCSA), and one team from Our Lady of Fatima Academy Incorporated (OLFAI).
Team USB of CCSA won the tournament as they were first to win three rounds out of five. The team members are Ron Angelo Gicale, Liam Palatino, Daniel Louis Malilong, Alexius Timothy Marquez, and Andre Von D, who are all Grade 10 students.
Team xXPURGEXx of MapúaMCM placed second with two wins and one loss, and Team Fleming Esports of MapúaMCM finished in third place with one win and two losses.
The champions for both Coding Challenge and Mobile Legends Competition received a grand prize of P5,000. The second placers received P3,000, while the third placers received P2,000. Meanwhile, the other participants received consolation prizes.
