Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao Donates to Frontliners at Southern Philippines Medical Center

Spirit of Bayanihan: Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao Donates Protective Gear to Medical Frontliners

On April 2-3, 2020, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao (MapúaMCM) through its Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement (CSCE) donated 500 pieces of face shields, 100 protective suits and 100 boxes of gloves to the ICU Cluster of the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).

This was an endeavor to strengthen the protection of our medical frontliners who are currently battling the pandemic known as Coronavirus-2019. Following MapúaMCM’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to care for the community, plans for donations began around March 25 wherein Engr. Dodjie Maestrecampo — Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao — solicited a poll for all Department Heads to give ideas on how to assist the community during these trying times. With Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao’s Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement at the lead,  they underwent careful consideration and observation from legitimate sources on both social media and frontliner validation on what particular items our frontliners are in need of. After this, the institution put in the proposal to donate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, face shields and protective suits.

The donations were then delivered to the ICU cluster of the Southern Philippines Medical Center, where various medical frontliners are currently making use of them to care for those affected by the Coronavirus-2019 pandemic. Kirby Blair P. Salisid,RN, and Dwight Jaime Hilario, RN, two of the ICU nurses working at Southern Philippines Medical Center expresses their gratitude towards the institution and the rest of the community for the donations, service and the disciplined attitude of citizens who stay at home and keep themselves and others safe.

“Thank you very much Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao for your donation of face shields and working gloves. This is a big help for us frontliners who are working hard to eliminate and stop the spread of COVID-19 here in our country. We are so happy and thankful to all the Davaoeños who are following the quarantine protocols, especially the order to stay at home. We stayed at work for you and you stayed at home for us. Thank you.” — Kirby Blair P. Salisid, RN.

Head of the Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement, Ms. Marycon Delos Reyes, comments that through this, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao wishes to act on its commitment to excellence and relevance in everything it does, especially service.

“Being in the field of education, we are not exactly at the frontlines of this battle. However, MapúaMCM stays true to its commitment to excellence and relevance in everything we do and this includes service… We might not be able to serve the patients ourselves but we can help arm those who do. Yes, we are confined to our homes but it doesn’t mean that we waive our rights and capacities to be of service.” — Marycon Delos Reyes, Head of the Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement.
