The purpose of this policy is to streamline the building standards applied by Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao to minimize water use by construction of rainwater harvesting system and wastewater treatment system.
1. Rainwater Harvesting System
The way of harvesting rainwater constructed at Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao is the Cistern Rainwater Harvesting, wherein cistern tank is constructed at the utility building (with a total volume capacity of 437 cubic meter) as Collection Tank and used PVC Pipe that is properly graded or pitch to ensure easy circulation, drainage and prevent water hammer and noise, slopes as follows unless otherwise indicated. 8” PVC pipe is connected to the wastewater treatment plant as water line connection collecting the wastewater from the treatment plant.
Rainwater Harvesting System process involves harvesting the rain from the roof. Then rainwater is filtered with a screen to prevent any contaminant such as leaves to enter the drainpipe. Rainwater passes thru the pipe and enters the collection tank where it will be stored and treated if needed. Finally, the rainwater passes through the supply faucet.
The rainwater collected from the Harvesting System is used for irrigating the landscape and plants at Mapúa MCM Garden by the landscaping personnel. General Facility Officer assigned at Building checks and record the volume of water collected at the Rainwater Collection Tank every month and submit data to IFO Manager for updating of monthly monitoring worksheet on re-use water collected.
2. Sewage Treatment Plant
This equipment is manufactured and distributed by PYROVOLT ENTERPRISES using Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation Process with Degassing Technology to treat wastewater coming from an establishment before discharging to rainwater tank. The equipment is designed according to the Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao wastewater rate of discharge and is fully compliant to the stringent Effluent Water Quality as required by Government Regulatory Agencies.
STAGE 1
Raw wastewater flows into the WWTF holding tanks through gravity PVC sewer pipes. Wastewater passes through equalization tank (chamber 1) and retaining solids. Wastewater then flows into the influent holding tank (2nd chamber) through the overflow pipe, floating oil, and grease in the 1st chamber.
STAGE 2
Influent at the 2nd chamber is pumped into the WWTF equipment by an alternating sewage pump (duplex type). The sewage pumps are sitting at box type sand screen filters at the bottom to avoid clogging of pumps. Wastewater is pumped into the Air Stripping Tower and as water moves downward it passes through several perforated plates in the tower. Air is blown upward by an air blower at the lower side of the tower removing unwanted gases and blown off into the Vent through roof (VTR) PVC pipe. Wastewater fills the electro chemical reactor tank and eventually coagulation and simultaneous chemical reactions occur at the reactor thus decreasing contaminants. Partially treated wastewater fills the batch tank below and filtration pumps will run at full tank level.
STAGE 3
Once batch tank is full, alternating high pressure filtration pump (duplex type) runs and pushes wastewater into series of sand, activated carbon and media filters. Sand filter removes sediments and clarify wastewater. Moreover, activated carbon facilitates odor removal and reduction of contaminants by adsorption. Sand and activated carbon filters are equipped with auto backwash valves thus minimizing manual maintenance and producing cleaner and clearer wastewater. Backwash water containing sediments and sludge flows into the sludge tank.
Furthermore, after passing through carbon filter, wastewater is pushed into series of micro filtration media filters of washable and replaceable type from 30 microns up to 1 micron thus removing sediments and killing most of the bacteria in the wastewater.
STAGE 4
Finally, filtered wastewater passes through the in-line UV Light to totally disinfect the influent. A dosing pump injects chlorine at the pipeline serving as redundant disinfection to produce a high-quality bacteria free effluent. Wastewater effluent is now safe to be discharged at the catch basin or effluent tank. Using the technology Electro-Chemical Advanced Oxidation Process with Degassing Technology in treating wastewater can effectively reduce pollutants in wastewater with an efficiency of 90% – 95% and is applicable to all types of industry.
