Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with STEMEd LLC last November 10, 2022 at the Acacia Hotel, Davao City.
This partnership aims to ignite student interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) via the development and teaching of grade level appropriate STEM-based lessons for Grades 7 through 10.
Present in the ceremony were Engr. Alejandro H. Ballado Jr, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Mapúa MCM; Dr. Flora Yparraguirre, Mapúa MCM High School Principal; and Mr. Leopoldo Aquino Jr., Director of the Mapúa MCM Office for Corporate Partnerships – together with representatives from STEMEd.
STEMEd is a U.S. company based in Irvine California, founded by Dr. Arthur Palisoc, a Filipino- American Scientist who graduated with a Physics degree from the Ateneo de Manila University. He was awarded a Phase 1- Seed Fund grant by the National Science Foundation to pursue his STEMEd project: “STEM Satellites as a Learning Tool: Fun and Games in Low Earth Orbit”.
Together with Mapúa Malayan Colleges of Mindanao, STEMEd is conducting a pilot study using STEM-focused lesson plans from data derived from orbiting satellites in order to further this mission. The goal of STEMEd is to spark students’ interest in STEM in order to encourage them to pursue STEM careers in the future.
A STEM-focused video game called SiSG (STEM In Space Game software) is being developed by STEMEd as part of its STEMSat project; half of it will be housed in the orbiting satellite and the other half in the classrooms or digital learning device of the student.
Learners’ access to STEMSat satellites will be provided by STEMEd. The students will see exactly what the satellite is seeing on their computer screens. They can start studying and analyzing the experimental data with assistance from their teachers once it has been fully downloaded to their computers.
Through this collaboration with STEMEd, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao hopes to highlight the importance and value of the scientific method to young learners in understanding the world around them.
